Souder Statement On Homeland Security Committee Hearing

U.S. Rep. Mark Souder released the following remarks today after a hearing on the Department of Homeland Security's 287(g) program:

"I hope today's hearing will draw attention to the need for greater ICE resources to support local law enforcement."

"Allen County alone has over 200 aliens currently in jail. They spend $40 per day per alien to house them. ICE has not yet replaced the person who is supposed to pick them up—this type of problem will continue to exist unless the 287(g) program is improved."

Key Facts:

* The 287(g) program allows Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to train willing State and local law enforcement officers to conduct certain immigration enforcement functions.

* Congressman Souder is the Republican leader of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border, Maritime, and Global Counterterrorism.

* Souder has worked to help local law enforcement agencies—particularly, in Allen and Noble counties—in their efforts to implement the 287(g) program.
